SPRINGFIELD, GA – Trinity Consultants (Trinity), a nationally known engineering firm hired by DRT to evaluate odors in the Springfield/Rincon area, has conducted initial odor sampling in and around DRT’s Springfield facility.
“Trinity is making good progress in their work to assess if any odors are coming from our plant that may be affecting our neighbors,” said John Varonka, Vice President, Ingredients Special Projects. “I want to emphasize that we aren’t waiting for Trinity’s report and are taking action to try and minimize odors where possible,” Varonka said. “We just completed enclosing our wastewater system, so it’s now piped directly to a closed tank.”
Throughout February, Trinity monitored odor at different times and across various locations, including nearby neighborhoods and schools. To ensure comprehensive data collection in a variety of weather conditions, Trinity is set to return to the site to conduct additional odor sampling before the end of April as the weather turns warmer.
Trinity has also collected odor samples from the Springfield facility and is currently completing an odor dispersion modeling analysis to understand odor distribution patterns in different weather conditions (utilizing five years of local meteorological data) and to identify other odor sources in the area. The study focuses on assessing potential odors in nearby areas where residents live, work, and learn.
Trinity expects to complete the odor evaluation in June, as planned, allowing it sufficient time to collect comprehensive data. For more information about DRT’s work to enclose its wastewater system, click here.
